you might be idling too high. fire it up, cut the choke and try turning the screw (left side under petcock, runs vertical with spring) and idling lower. engine should slow to a lazy 'lope' while idling, then take her for a spin and check for result. the mixture screw you're talking about is on the right side of the carb, forward next to coupling with the jug. might be 'covered' with a brass plug (see other posts). i've had this problem before and idling lower seems to have fixed it. good luck - t..
